Dionysus, the notorious Greek god of intoxication, ecstasy and madness. Here depicted on a red-figure amphora (c. 500 BC) as a bearded, ivy-crowned cross-dresser draped in the hide of a panther, clutching a drinking cup (kanthoros) in one hand and a grapevine in the other. Hes surrounded by his devotees, who wield their snakes and thyrses.
